Before you create another post, check your profile!
Updated: Oct 15
Not a quick glance while you were uploading something. I mean properly looked.
If someone landed on your Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn profile today, would they immediately understand what your business does? Would they know who you help? Would they know how to contact you? And perhaps most importantly, would what they see still be accurate?
Social media profiles have a habit of becoming little time capsules. We set them up, carefully choose a profile photo, write a bio, add a link and then carry on posting for the next three years without ever looking at the information sitting around the edges. Meanwhile, your business changes - your services evolve, your website changes...maybe your branding has refresh....and suddenly your social media is introducing the 2023 version of your business!

Your profile is often one of the first places someone checks after hearing about you and before getting in touch, they have a look to decide “Is this person or business for me?”...and you want to make that answer easy.
Your profile doesn’t need to contain your entire business story. It justneeds to give people enough information to understand what you do, feel they’re in the right place and know what to do next. It’s also worth looking at the overall impression your recent content creates. If your bio says you specialise in one thing but none of your posts have mentioned it for six months, there can be a disconnect. Likewise, if your latest pinned post is promoting an event that happened last year, it might be time for a tidy-up!
AI can actually be quite handy here. You can give it your existing bio and ask whether the wording is clear, what someone might assume about your business or whether there are obvious gaps, but don't just automatically accept its rewrite.
AI has a remarkable ability to turn a perfectly normal small business into a “dynamic provider of innovative solutions committed to empowering clients on their journey towards success.”...and if you wouldn’t say it out loud, don’t put it in your bio.
Your profile should sound like you, look like you and accurately reflect the business someone is going to encounter when they contact you.
So, before you worry about creating more content, make sure your profile is up-to-date!
