Branding on Social Media - how to build trust when you're not a graphic designer

Branding is often misunderstood as something that’s only about logos, fonts, and colour palettes. While those things do matter, branding on social media goes much deeper than visuals alone.
Your brand is how people experience your business online - and social media plays a big role in shaping that experience, and while I'm not a branding expert or graphic designer, I want to share some of the basics I've learned along the way.
What branding really means on social media
On social media, your branding includes:
how you communicate
what you talk about
how your posts look together
the tone you use in captions and stories
Strong branding helps people recognise you and feel confident in your business. It builds familiarity and trust over time, and consistency builds credibility.
It's good to remember that you don’t need a perfectly curated feed. What you need is consistency.
This can be as simple as:
using the same 2-3 colours regularly
sticking to one or two fonts
writing captions in a consistent tone
When your content feels familiar, people are more likely to stop scrolling, engage, ...and remember you!
If trying to write in your brand voice feels awkward, it’s often because you’re trying to sound like someone else.
Your brand voice should feel natural - like how you’d explain things to a client in real life. It might be:
friendly and conversational
calm and professional
warm and supportive
clear and straight to the point
Maybe try to imagine you're speaking to a friend to start out with, and remember - there’s no “right” brand voice. The best one is the one you can use consistently.
Small tweaks make a big difference Many small businesses assume they need a full rebrand when their socials don’t feel quite right. In reality, small changes - like simplifying visuals or clarifying messaging - often make the biggest impact.
